- New page on Disposal at Hanford: many DOE sites are planning disposal of low-level and mixed waste over the next several years. This page describes the types of waste that can be disposed at Hanford in light of Federal and State regulations and Hanford permit requirements.
- New Land Disposal Notification and Certification Forms: The State of Washington recently adopted the Federal LDR regulations effective on July 1, 1999 (includes Phase IV of the LDR regulations). As an aid to generators shipping waste to Hanford, we have developed new LDR forms that simplify notification and certification under the Phase IV LDR regulations.
- Tools page: forms are now distributed as self-extracting compressed files for faster downloading; new links provided for useful regulatory information on the web.
- Waste Specification Records (WDRds): There are two significant changes to the WSRds. First, the 401 WSRd has been revised to increase the flash point range up to 93 degrees Celcius to better address fire safety for storage in the Central Waste Complex. Second, High Mercury Subcategory debris can now be managed under 600 Series WSRds 625-02, 626-02, and 627-03. Sheets A and C of the WSRd Assignment Matrix have been revised to reflect these changes.

The Hanford waste storage and disposal rates have been updated with the FY99 rate information.
September 3, 1998 - Waste Specification Records
The Waste Specification Records (WSRds) have been revised and placed on a new page, which also describes the purpose of WSRds and how to assign a WSRd for a given waste stream. These WSRds replace the existing ones effective October 1, 1998.
July 27, 1998
Revised Polymer Sorbents for Aqueous Liquids, Notes & Limitations statement.
June 29, 1998 - Revised Hanford Site Solid Waste Acceptance Criteria
A major revision to the Hanford Site Solid Waste Acceptance Criteria has been released (now HNF-EP-0063, Revision 5). The document has been rewritten in a more concise format. The following are major changes:
- Overall content. The acceptance criteria document is now limited to technical acceptance criteria; most administrative requirements, forms, and general information have been removed. In addition, regulatory guidance and the background information for each requirement in the previous revision of the acceptance criteria (WHC-EP-0063-4) have been removed.
- Organization. Waste acceptance requirements have been reorganized by waste management unit rather than by waste type. This substantially clarifies the acceptance requirements for any given waste stream.
- Distribution and format. The Hanford Site Solid Waste Acceptance Criteria document is now distributed through the Internet. All proposed and final revisions will be placed on this web site. Requests for comments and notification of changes will be made by e-mail. Acceptance criteria are available in two formats: (1) HTML format for convenient online viewing with links to references and related information available on the Internet and (2) Adobe PDF format, which is the convenient method for printing a hard copy.
- Nonradioactive waste. Criteria relating to nonradioactive waste have been removed.
- Physical/chemical characterization of waste. A new set of chemical characterization requirements has been added (Section 2.3) to align with recent changes to our waste analysis plans. Specific requirements for compliance with federal and state land disposal restrictions are provided in Sections 2.3, 3.3.2, and 4.3.2.
- Radiological characterization and classification of waste. The requirements for radiological characterization have been expanded and clarified (Section 2.4). Radioisotope limits and calculation methods are provided in a new Appendix A. The requirement to manage 233U and radium as transuranic waste has been eliminated.
- Radiological release. This requirement defines when customers must attempt to obtain radiological release of mixed waste (Section 2.5.2).
- Clarification of waste management unit permit restrictions. Chapters 3 through 7 identify the allowable waste numbers, and whether the unit can accept PCB waste and waste from CERCLA cleanup activities.
- Liquid restrictions. The restrictions on acceptance of liquids at the Low-Level Burial Grounds, including the two lined disposal trenches, have been revised (Sections 3.3.2 and 4.3.1).
- Dose rate limits. Dose rate restrictions for each waste management unit have been modified slightly.
- Packaging. The packaging requirements for each waste management unit have been modified. In most cases, the new packaging requirements are less prescriptive, allowing customers more flexibility to meet storage and disposal requirements. The applicable container size and weight restrictions for each unit also are identified.
- Labeling. Requirements for labeling containers have been simplified.
- T-Plant Complex and Waste Receiving and Processing (WRAP) facility acceptance criteria. Each unit now has its own chapter with detailed acceptance criteria.
- Transuranic waste requirements. The Hanford Site currently is developing its certification program for shipment to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). This revision of the acceptance criteria provides interim requirements specific to transuranic waste. These requirements will be replaced when the WIPP certification program is complete.
- Sorbents, stabilizers, and void fillers. Approved sorbents, stabilizers, and void fillers have been removed from the document and placed on this web site to allow more frequent updating.
June 29, 1998 - Revised waste acceptance process and new forms
The process for obtaining approval for waste streams and waste shipments has changed. The major changes relate to two new forms used to describe waste streams and individual containers.
- Waste Profile Sheet. Waste streams are now described on a standard form, the Waste Profile Sheet, in lieu of Waste Certification Summaries. The Waste Profile Sheet is simpler to complete and provides more specific data needed to manage the waste stream. Electronic Waste Profile Sheet forms are available on this web site. The transition period for converting existing Waste Certification Summaries to Waste Profile Sheets is through the end of 1998. Waste Management Representatives will assist customers by drafting Waste Profile Sheets for existing approved waste streams.
- Container Data Sheet. Data on individual waste containers are now described on a simplified form, the Container Data Sheet, in lieu of the Solid Waste Storage/Disposal Record. The Container Data Sheet eliminates some unnecessary and redundant data. Electronic Container Data Sheet forms are available on this web site. Hanford Site customers who access the Solid Waste Information Tracking System (SWITS) database can input data directly in lieu of completing a Container Data Sheet.
June 29, 1998 - Tools
This web site includes a variety of new tools for customers. Besides electronic forms, the web site includes information on waste storage and disposal rates, lists of Waste Specification Records; approved sorbents, stabilizers, and void fillers; approved high integrity containers; and who to contact for more information. We will update this web site regularly as other tools are developed for our customers.
