Hanford Site Solid Waste Acceptance Program
Acceptance Criteria

Current Hanford Site Solid Waste Acceptance Criteria

In January 2008, in support of Solid Waste Storage and Disposal, a revision of the Hanford Site Solid Waste Acceptance Criteria was completed. The changes made include:

  • Updated the web site addresses throughout the document
  • Section 2.6.2 revised first bullet to read: Radiological surface contamination exceeds the values established in HNF-5173, Table 4-1. Materials/equipment with potential radioactivity in volume above background from DOE operations cannot be released unless DOE has approved an authorized limit or the conditions of HNF-PRO-20377 for TSCA/RCRA waste are satisfied.
  • Section 2.7 added the clarifying sentence: If transuranic waste does not meet the requirements of appendices G and I an exception to HNF-EP-0063 would be required in order for the waste to be accepted at a SWOC facility. For transuranic waste that meets general SWOC requirements, but not appendices G and I DOE-RL will be contacted for consultation of the exception.
  • Section 2.10, updated the section with the following verbiage: A portion of the waste containers sent to Hanford Site TSD units must be verified by physical inspection (Nondestructive Examination, Visual Examination) or chemical screening as stated in the waste analysis plans for the TSD units (e.g., HNF-1886 or HNF-9921). For most waste types this verification will be performed at the generator’s location by physical inspection before or during packaging. Cases where the verification cannot be performed at the generator’s location, the generators must notify the Hanford Site Waste Acceptance organization prior to packaging the waste. The Performance Evaluation System committee will evaluate the individual cases and determine if verification for the waste will be performed at one of the Hanford site TSD units.
  • Section 2.12.2, added the following sentence to the end of the paragraph: Un-vented drums equal or greater than 33 dose-equivalent curies without Overpack are prohibited (HNF-15280).
  • Section 3-1, Table 3-1, updated the waste numbers table to account for acceptable codes per the Permit A out for review.
  • Section 4.1, Table 4-1, deleted waste codes no longer used.
  • Section 4.5.6, updated the wording to the following: Waste shall be stored on metal and wood pallets. However, wood pallets must meet the requirements of HNF-FMP-07-32540-RO. For the specific requirements refer to the Hanford Site Solid Waste Acceptance Program Internet web site.
  • Section 5.1, Table 5-1, deleted waste codes no longer used.
  • Section 6.1, Table 6-1, deleted waste codes no longer used.
  • Section 6.3.3, updated wording to account for actual container sizes that can be handled
  • Section 6.3.4, updated wording: The maximum weights for containers handled at WRAP.
  • Appendix A1.1.7, revised bullet number two to clarify wording to read: The package factors are used to adjust the effective amount of material at risk. This is justified in those cases were the robustness of the waste packaging and dispersibility of the waste form are sufficiently different than the waste form and container used in the original analysis to adjust the facility or container DE-Ci limits.
  • Appendix B clarification and modification of criticality requirements based on CSER updates. Table B-2 is completely redone as a result of CSER updates.
  • Appendix G, clarified requirements.
  • Appendix I, clarified requirements.
  • Miscellaneous editorial
