Beryllium Disease: Increasing Awareness/Improving Worker Health Beryllium dust generated during various processes and left behind at locations around the Hanford Site, when inhaled or contacted on the skin, can sensitize some individuals and cause a chronic, progressively worsening lung disease. This presentation surveys the pathology and course of beryllium disease, its cause, prevention, treatment and statistics. Also discussed are the regulatory, legal and social dimensions of this rare but increasingly prevalent disease.
