Description:
Hanford's disposal facility for mixed and low-level radioactive waste, the Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility, will be expanded using Recovery Act funds. Crews with Washington Closure Hanford and its subcontractors will be constructing disposal cells to provide additional disposal capacity for contaminated soil and debris from cleanup activities at the Hanford Site. The facility is also expanding operations to receive more truckloads of waste per day in order to support additional cleanup work that will be done with Recovery Act funding. ERDF has a capacity of about 11 million tons, with more than 8 million tons already disposed in ERDF since the facility was built in 1996.
