Aerial Surveys of Waste Site
Name: Aerial Surveys of Waste Site
Document Date: 10/02/2009
Keywords: recovery, aerial, survey, helicopter, BC Control, contamination, cleanup
Area: BC Control Area
Description:
Using Recovery Act funding, contractors are cleaning up dozens of waste sites. In this photo, a Bell 412 helicopter outfitted with radiation detection equipment flies over a large waste site near the center of Hanford to pinpoint the location and type of contamination requiring cleanup. The aerial surveys were conducted for approximately $300,000, about $700,000 less than traditional survey methods using a vehicle. The surveys were completed in days as opposed to 6-8 months for a ground survey of the 13-square-mile BC Control Area.
