Description:
Using Recovery Act funding, workers are retrieving 12,000 drums worth of solid, radioactive waste from trenches in the center of the site, most of it in large reinforced boxes. The waste was retrievably stored in the 1970s and 1980s. In this photo, Teamsters are carefully removing soil from Boxes 5 and 8 by hand in Burial Ground 218-W-3A, Trench 17 to permit inspection by engineers prior to removal of the boxes from the trench.
