Hanford Tank Farms Vadose Zone Monitoring
The DOE Office of River Protection (DOE-ORP) conducts monitoring for potential contaminant migration resulting from tank leaks and/or other contamination events related to tank farms operations at the Hanford Site near Richland, WA.
Single- and double-shell, steel-lined concrete tanks were constructed at Hanford for underground storage of liquid waste that resulted from the processing of plutonium.
Between 1995 and 2000, a baseline characterization was conducted in the single-shell tank monitoring boreholes using a high-resolution spectral gamma logging system.
A faster spectral gamma logging system, known as the Radionuclide Assessment System (RAS) has been designed for routine monitoring. Routine monitoring is conducted in selected intervals of existing boreholes adjacent to the single-shell tanks.
Scope of Project
- Evaluation of existing data and development of a database of existing boreholes associated with the single-shell tanks. This database will include information derived from the baseline characterization effort, historical gross gamma data, and tank conditions relative to monitoring.
- Selection and prioritization of individual borehole intervals to be logged.
- Scheduling of monitoring operations.
- Monitoring data acquisition.
- Data evaluation.
- Reporting and investigation of anomalies.
- Routine reporting.
Project Objectives
- Provide data of known and defensible quality.
- Monitor vadose zone gamma activity in selected borehole intervals within existing monitoring boreholes adjacent to single-shell tanks.
- Evaluate borehole data to assess the possibility of contaminant migration, as indicated by changes in activity and/or shifts in plume boundaries over time.
Log/Data Reports
Monitoring data collected following the completion of the Hanford Tank Farms Vadose Zone Baseline Characterization Project include additional spectral gamma logging system (SGLS) data, neutron moisture logging system (NMLS) data, and high rate logging system (HRLS) data. All tank farms data (baseline, monitoring) are categorized by tank farm, tank, and borehole. Each logging event listing includes logging date and logging system used to collect data. Click here for complete tank farm data and report listing (includes tank reports, tank farm reports, special investigative monitoring reports).
* Note: Data collected with the Radionuclide Assessment System (RAS) are reported in quarterly and annual monitoring reports. Data for individual boreholes are not included on this web site but are available upon request.
