Integrated Disposal Facility (IDF) Performance Assessment

The Integrated Disposal Facility (IDF) performance assessment (PA) activity supports the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of River Protection. The goal of this activity is to estimate the long-term human health and environment impacts from the disposal of immobilized low-activity waste (ILAW) packages, melters, and radioactive solid waste (including secondary waste from the manufacture of ILAW) in Hanford's 200 East Area. This activity is an extension of the ILAW PA activity, which only analyzed the disposal of ILAW packages.

In 1998, this activity published an impacts assessment, "Hanford Immobilized Low-Activity Waste Performance Assessment," which has been approved by the Department of Energy (DOE). As required by DOE, the performance assessment is being continually updated, and significant data collection activities are in progress in the areas of glass waste form performance, and in geology, hydrology, and geochemistry characterization studies. This information was used to produce the 2001 version of the ILAW PA (DOE/ORP-2000-24), which was approved by DOE in November 2001. Annual summaries will be produced each year until 2005, when the next full version of the performance assessment is expected to be issued. Related documents have been produced (risk assessments, documents supporting the IDF PA, documents supporting the ILAW PA and other documents) and more will be issued as time progresses.
