Tank Farm Closure Performance Assessment
The Tank Farm Closure Performance Assessment activity supports the U.S. Department
of Energy's Office of River Protection. The
tank farm closure performance assessment will document the information (including
estimates of future environmental and human health impacts) from closing Hanford’s
177 tanks. This performance assessment will be maintained, so that as new information
is obtained, the document will be updated. Wastes that are expected to remain in the farm
after closure are:
- Wastes from past leaks
- Residual waste left in tanks after retrieval
- Waste from potential leaks during retrieval, and
- Waste in the infrastructure outside of the tanks, such as piping
The performance assessment will meet the requirements of the Department of Energy’s Order
on Radioactive Waste Management (DOE O 435.1) and the Hanford Federal Facility Agreement
and Consent Order (more commonly known as the Tri-Party Agreement). In addition, the
document will be summarized as risk assessments to be included in other documents
supporting tank waste retrieval and tank closure.
To support this effort, a large number of supporting documents (definition documents,
data packages, simulation reports and other documents) have been and/or are being created.
