Past Technical Review Activities
The work at the Hanford Site has had a long history of technical review activities, from the early
activities by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and its staff's presentations at various
scientific forums to the current activities by the various site contractors to evaluate critical
elements of the clean-up effort. Many of these activities included internal review committees
and collaborations among experts working on the site. External reviews included presentations
at professional conferences, involvement in national and international working groups on various
topics, and collaborations with other experts not directly associated with the Hanford Site.
Integration Project Expert Panel (IPEP)
The Integration Project Expert Panel (IPEP) provided broad, independent oversight of many
Groundwater/Vadose Zone Integration Project activities. Its eight members reviewed and
commented on key programmatic, managerial, technical, and stakeholder issues. The IPEP
operated primarily as an operational review panel, but periodically conducted technical
reviews.
IPEP Meetings
At each of its meetings, which were open to the public, the IPEP provided constructive
comments and recommendations on the Integration Project endeavors.

The IPEP had the ability to establish IPEP Subpanels that were comprised of experts who were
focused on specific technical topics, according to project needs.

IPEP Background Information
National Academy of Sciences
A Committee on Environmental Remediation Science & Technology from the National Academy of
Sciences (NAS) reviewed the science & technology aspects of the Groundwater/Vadose
Zone Integration Project. They provided recommendations to improve technical quality and
program relevance to Department of Energy decision-making process for remediation actions
at Hanford. Reports can be found on the website
for the NAS Committee on Environmental Remediation Science & Technology.
The review included assessment of:
The technical merit of science & technology work, including its likely
contribution to advancing the state of scientific knowledge.
The relevance and timeliness of science & technology work
to DOE remediation decisions at the Hanford Site.
The potential applicability of science & technology results at Hanford to contamination
problems at other DOE sites, as well as the applicability of science & technology at
other DOE sites to Hanford.
Other Technical Review Activities
In addition to these larger efforts, there have been other review
panels assembled to evaluate narrower ranges of topics. Among these are the
Management Review of the System Assessment Capability,
Partitioning Interwell Tracer Test (PITT) at Hanford,
Groundwater Peer Review Panel, and
Washington Advisory Group's evaluation of research and development
activities which contributed to the understanding of contaminant
migration.
