DOE EH-31 DQO/DQA Training
Course Evaluations and Commendations
Evaluation from Les Benedict,
Assistant Director, St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, Environment Division
October 7, 2002
Mr. Zaragosa and Mr. Skhan,
I just returned form DQO
training in Edison, NJ. I signed up for the
course several weeks ago in order to increase my knowledge and
understanding for sampling design so that I would be able to provide
higher quality of service to my staff at the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe,
Environment Division; I can safely say that this was accomplished and
then some. The training course went far beyond my own expectations and
provided me with the tools that really needed when dealing with
environmental sampling. As the QAO for the Tribe we are constantly
faced with trying to determine the number of samples that we need along
with maintaining controls on our budgets. Tribes in general are
extremely limited in thei resources to begin with. The DQO training
I
received along with the tutorial in Visual Sampling Plan (VSP) will
go a
long way in providing a meaningful way of designing sampling plans.
It is my hope that other
Tribes will take advantage of this training, as
I can see that it is badly needed. I recommend that the Northern
Arizona University, Insitute for Tribal Environmental Professionals,
directed by Mr. Virgil Masavesyva, (928) 523-9555, learn of this
training and consider hosting it for Tribes.
Also, in coordination with
Mr. Kai Tang, USEPA, Region 2 QAO, I would
like to work on setting up a DQO training course for Region 2 and also
Region 1 Tribal nations to make it more cost effective. I have been
working with Mr. Kai Tang on QA for 2-years now, Mrs. Margo Hunt was
our
Point of Contact (POC) for many years and is now in headquarters and
is
familiar with Tribes as well. I feel that their input into working with
the Tribe will be valuable. In setting up training for the Tribes I
recommend that the first day be set up for review of a statistics and
related terminology.
It is my hope that the DQO
training will be met with the same enthusiasm
that the instructors have about the subject matter. The instruction
was
provided in practical terms, with hands-on demonstration that reinforced
the lecture. Granted, there was a lot of material but I believe that
the curriculum was delivered to maximize learning and retention.
Sincerely,
Les Benedict
