Subject: Data Quality Objectives Training

JoAnn,

On February 1-3, 2005, EPA Region 10 hosted the course Managing Uncertainty with Systematic Planning for Environmental Decision-Making presented by Sebastian Tindall. We were very fortunate to have access to Sebastian the next week when he offered to meet with several project teams to run through the DQO process and apply it to specific projects.
This session was well worth the effort and demonstrated how the DQO process applies to the real world.

In Region 10 we have been working with former vermiculite expansion plants that processed ore from Libby, Montana. The ore was contaminated with asbestos which now contaminates the processing sites.
Applying the principals learned in Sebastian’s course has been very helpful in our quality assurance efforts. Having the extra time to run through the DQO process with him for one the processing sites was extremely helpful. He will be meeting with us again on July 25th to help us further refine our approach.

Based on our experience with this training and seeing the DQO process in action, I strongly recommend continued support for the course and suggest that EPA continue to fund the second week of site specific coaching offered by Sebastian Tindall. We hope other staff in Region 10 will have the opportunity to attend his training, and especially to work with him on specific projects. We would appreciate anything you could do to ensure this type of training is available in the future. If you would like additional information from those who have attended the training in Region 10, please feel free to contact me. Thanks for your time and consideration.
