Planning/Preparing for Your Safety Meeting

So you're responsible for a safety meeting -- now what?

  • Decide what topic you want to cover.
  • Do a little research.  This website contains a variety of fire prevention reference material. There are also many other internet sites with similar information.
  • Gather your materials (paper and/or video).
  • Read through the material ahead of time to help you with your presentation.  You may also want to take the opportunity to ask questions about the check points provided in the lesson.
  • Begin each meeting with a firm determination to accomplish something, eliminate hazardous conditions, and contribute your very best thought and effort toward injury reduction.
  • Discuss and status previous safety issues.  Ensure that these items are being resolved in a timely manner.
  • Consider using the fire safety checklist included as part of this lesson plan and have employees inspect their work areas as a group activity.
  • Encourage audience participation!  Invite your audience to share in an exchange of recent lessons learned, near misses, or personnel experiences as a tool to prevent reoccurrence.  The more discussion and interaction usually makes the meeting more effective!
