All Fired Up!

When winter comes, we tend to think of home as a warm, safe retreat from the cold weather outside. But sources of indoor warmth can put you at significant risk to fire if they’re not used carefully.

Fact: According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), heating equipment is the second leading cause of U.S. home fires. An average of 74,400 home heating fires each year results in 480 deaths, 2,290 injuries and $582 million in property damage. In addition, December, January and February are the leading months for fires in the U.S.

Keep warm and safe by using the following heating advice from the NFPA:

• All heating systems should be inspected and cleaned, if necessary, by a trained professional before the start of each heating season.
• Keep combustibles, including people, pets and furniture, at least three feet (one meter) away from all heat sources, especially space and portable heaters.
• Turn off space and portable heaters when leaving home or going to bed.
• When using a fireplace, place a fire screen of sturdy metal or heat tempered glass in front of it to trap any sparks. Burn only seasoned wood – never rubbish - in your fireplace.
• Keep fireplace mantels and the surrounding area clear of combustibles, such as dried flowers and wreaths.
• Inspect electrical heaters for frayed, cracked or damaged cords, and have them replaced by an electrician.
