Hanford Firefighter Holds His Own Weight (And Then Some) by Martha Rice In August, Hanford Firefighter Dean Compau set new records for Washington State in a regional competition of the World Association of Bench Pressers and Deadlifters for his weight class. Compau, who competed in the
181 pound weight class in the Men's Law Enforcement/Firemen Open Division,
lifted 374.75 pounds in the Single Lift Dead Lift competition and pressed 275.5
pounds in the Single Lift Bench Press competition. "In the single lift
competition, competitors start off with a weight they're comfortable with and
add on heavier weights," said Compau. "As long as you are lifting
successfully, you can continue for up to four lifts. If you miss any lifts, you
only get three attempts. Your overall score is based on your best lift".
Not one to toot his own horn, Compau downplays his remarkable feats, "I didn't do any special preparation for this tournament. And I was as surprised as anyone when they said I had set a new state record." What was next for this record-setting weightlifter? He attended the World Championships in Portland, Oregon, on November 13-15. "I go into these competitions with the goal in mind that I'll do the best I can and if I win, I win," said Compau. Well, he continued his record-setting ways. He placed 3rd in the Bench Press, setting yet another Washington State Record of 287 pounds. Compau came away with the world championship in the Deadlift, establishing a new world record of 404 pounds. Back to HFD News Archives |
