SUMMARY

VPP Star Status

Advanced Technologies and Laboratories (ATL) International, Inc., recently earned the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) STAR status for the second time. This elite award is the highest level of recognition available in DOE’s safety program. The DOE VPP promotes safety and health excellence through cooperative efforts among labor, management, and government at DOE site across the nation.

In 2005, ATL was the first small business to be awarded a prime contract at DOE’s Hanford site in Richland, WA. In April 2008, DOE awarded this woman-owned small business its first VPP STAR status, marking the first time in DOE’s nationwide complex that a small-business prime contractor won this honor. ATL was also awarded DOE’s 2009 Woman-Owned Small Business of the Year Award for their outstanding performance.

VPP recognizes employers and workers in private industry and federal agencies who have implemented effective safety and health management systems and maintained injury and illness rates below national Bureau of Labor Statistics averages for their respective industries. VPP relies on management, labor, and OSHA working cooperatively and proactively to prevent fatalities, injuries, and illnesses through a system focused on: hazard prevention and control; worksite analysis; training; management commitment; and worker involvement. VPP participants are re-evaluated every three to five years to remain in the programs. Brad Davy from the DOE-HQ VPP Program has stated in the past it is harder to keep STAR status than to receive it recognizing that sustained, continuing improvement can be difficult.

The Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Worker Safety and Health Assistance awarded Advanced Technologies & Laboratories (ATL) International, Inc., the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) “Star of Excellence” Award at the National VPP Conference in Orlando, Florida in August 2010. ATL is the Laboratory Analytical Services & Testing Contractor (LAS&T) for the 222-S Laboratory at the Hanford 200 West Area, and became a VPP STAR Site in 2007.

The “Star of Excellence” was awarded to ATL based upon their employee’s full dedication and total commitment to the principles of VPP, having achieved an outstanding level of performance in meeting established safety and health goals, actively conducting outreach to others, and in achieving an injury and illness rate significantly below the average of similar businesses and operations.

ATL has demonstrated excellence in the areas of management leadership, employee involvement, worksite analysis, hazard prevention and control and safety and health training.
