SEGMENT 2 HISTORY

Segment 2 is part of the larger 100-F/IU-2/IU-6 decision area within the River Corridor. Segment 2 does not contain any historical reactor or operational areas. No documented or organized waste burial practices, minimal below-grade engineered systems and underground piping, or liquid disposal areas (such as ponds and retention basins) exist in Segment 2.

Historical activities that typically occurred within Segment 2 before 1943 (pre-Hanford) were limited to homestead and farming activities in the northeast corner of Segment 2 as evidenced by the identification of a water storage tank with concrete foundation and nearby debris that were located during this evaluation. No apparent farming (i.e., row crops and orchards) occurred in this area probably due to the soil conditions, which are primarily dune formations (hills of sand). The only significant activity is adjacent to Segment 2 and is associated with the anti-aircraft gun site H-42 that operated as part of the Hanford air defense system from 1950 to early 1958.

The archaeological record of Native American occupation of the Hanford Site stretches back thousands of years. Typical archaeological sites include open campsites, hunting/kill sites, game drive complexes, quarries, and spirit quest sites.
