NOTES ON BERYLLIUM FACILITIES LIST

NOTE: As of 2005, each of the Hanford Prime Contractors is maintaining information on the facilities that they administer. As such, this list linked to below is no longer being maintained, and the information contained in the list, and on the Fact Sheets attached to the list, may not be up-to-date. Fluor Hanford has set up a new list, also available from this web site, with information on buildings they currently administer. Other Hanford Prime Contractors may have similar lists but need to be contacted for how to access the most current information. This list is provided here for historical information.

The original Hanford Beryllium Suspect Facilities List was formalized in 1998. At the time, only limited historical information was available and virtually no current wipe sampling or airborne monitoring. The Suspect List was prepared as a tool in predicting whether employees who had worked in certain facilities had a potential for beryllium exposure

Since 1998, additional information has been obtained on facilities on the Suspect List. Additional historical information has been obtained, both from document reviews and personal interviews. Characterizations, both and initial and detailed, have been performed in some of these facilities. Based on this new information, many updates have been made to the Suspect List. In some cases, facilities that were originally believed to have a potential for beryllium exposure were found to have been placed on the list in error. In other cases, facilities were determined to have a potential for past beryllium exposure, but did not present a potential for current beryllium exposure.

Based on this, the Hanford Beryllium Steering Group decided to construct a new beryllium facilities list. This new list would not attempt to evaluate the potential for past beryllium exposure at Hanford facilities, but would focus on the current potential for exposure. As such, it would be a valuable tool for work planning purposes in determining where work might have the potential for exposure and when control measures would be implemented. The Suspect List has now been retired, and questions relating to past exposures can be answered by reviewing the fact sheets for each facility.

The link below displays this list, which we have termed the Beryllium Facilities List. It was developed primarily by Chuck Wildman, Henry Ruby and Elton Hewitt. It has been reviewed by the Beryllium Steering Group and the Beryllium Awareness group. The list is intended to be a living document with updates performed when additional information is obtained on facilities. A procedure will be developed to ensure that any changes to this list are performed in a consistent manner.

The "safety review" referenced in the following table indicates that a review of the potential for beryllium exposure needs to be performed prior to initiating work. This review will involve the Automated Job Hazard Analysis (AJHA) or some other process to ensure that the potential for beryllium exposure is formally evaluated on each of the work tasks.
