CURRENT OPERATIONS
Building still present: YES
Beryllium present: NO
Current building occupancy/activity: This building has been turned over to the Port of Benton.
2000 Study Results: Characterization of this facility was performed on 5/19/00 by PNNL for DOE-RL. Lockheed - Martin's Y-12 plant lab, analyzed wipe samples taken on 5/19/00. The wipe samples were collected from throughout the building. 25 of the 29 samples taken were below the detection level of 0.1ug/100cm2 with four samples between 0.109 and 0.176ug/100cm2. The building did not have inaccessible areas where beryllium would present a hazard at a later date during modifications or dismantlement of the building. The building was primitive construction of heavy timbers with very limited HVAC ducting that had been removed prior to sampling, and no finished walls or ceilings, etc. It was concluded that prior potential beryllium work does not present a risk of exposure to beryllium now or in the future from past operations. These results were communicated to the Port of Benton by DOE-RL.
Maximum Estimated Current Be exposure: NONE
Basis for above information: During a beryllium awareness meeting one employee thought beryllium materials had been used in the fabrication shop. The employee provided names of Hanford retires who had worked in the building. These employees indicated that they fabricated items with exotic metals but did not know if any of the metals were beryllium or beryllium alloys. A DOE-RL representative contacted representatives of the Hanford Building Trades Medical Screening Program office in Pasco, WA. to determine if former workers had listed building 1240 as source for beryllium exposure. They responded that two former Hanford workers had identified building 1240 as a source for possible beryllium exposure on the questionnaire that they had completed. Based on this limited information it was concluded that it would be prudent to sample the 1240 building for possible beryllium contamination.
Comments, including any additional information needed (specify): All equipment was removed and the building cleaned prior to transfer to Port of Benton.
