PAST OPERATIONS
Beryllium brought in facility: YES
Form of beryllium: VARIES
Period of beryllium operations (dates): Start: 1973 End: 2004

Location(s) in facility that contained beryllium materials: Miscellaneous neutron source processing in Gloveboxes MT-1, MT-4. MT-5 and MT-6 (Room 41). These enclosures are indicated with a Potential Beryllium posting.

Description of beryllium activities: The neutron source products typically consisted of an alloy of plutonium and beryllium in a ratio of about two parts of plutonium to one part beryllium on a weight basis. The sources where machined in Glovebox HA-39 (Decommissioned from service in 1977, Room 235 in 234-5Z) then packaged for transportation to 236-Z. The Plutonium was reclaimed and remaining removed as waste.

Building monitoring data summary: Additional building characterization sampling data is currently being collected. Beryllium characterization sampling of Room 41 completed June 2004 showed no detectable levels of Beryllium per swipe and air monitoring.

Personnel monitoring data summary: Personnel monitoring data collected during characterization activities have to date showed no detectable levels of Beryllium per swipe and air monitoring.

Specify Engineering/Administrative controls used during operations: Negative building ventilation systems with Glovebox and other process equipment enclosures where utilized during the handling of Plutonium with Beryllium impurities material.

Maximum Estimated Past Be exposure: None known

CURRENT OPERATIONS
Building still present: YES
Beryllium present: Yes

Current building occupancy/activity: The building is being stabilized for decommissioning. Plutonium Oxide with Beryllium impurities are contained within engineered control systems. Negative building ventilation systems will remain active until final phases of D&D activities. Glovebox and other process equipment enclosures will have contamination removed prior to removal and disposal. The removal process will be tightly controlled utilizing sound engineering and good work practices.

Maximum Estimated Current Be Exposure: NONE

Basis for above information: Information obtained by Deborah Alexander, interviews with site personnel. PFP Resource Center release of “Update and Status of Beryllium at PFP” Information Bulletin 3 dated March 8, 2004, PFP Resource Center release of “Information of the Status of PFP Be Work” dated May 26, 2004.

Comments, including any additional information needed (specify): None.
