PAST OPERATIONS
Beryllium brought in facility: YES
Form of beryllium: SOLID
Period of beryllium operations (dates): Start: 1987 End: 1990
Location(s) in facility that contained beryllium materials: Sheldon lathe in the graphite shop

Description of beryllium activities: Beryllium was machined on the lathe. This may have been a one-time incident.

Building monitoring data summary: Five swipe samples were collected after the machining operation which ranged from 0.1 to 5.2 mg/in2 . Four additional swipes were collected after decontamination of which three were below detection limits ranging between (0.2 to 0.03 mg/in2) and the fourth had a reported result of 0.04 mg/in2.

Personnel monitoring data summary: None identified.
Specify Engineering/Administrative controls used during operations: None identified.

Maximum Estimated Past Be exposure: LOW

CURRENT OPERATIONS
Building still present: YES
Beryllium present: No, with possible exception of Sheldon lathe.
Current building occupancy/activity: Beryllium wipe, bulk, and air sampling was conducted February, 2000. Wipe samples were obtained throughout the machine shop in areas most likely to contain removable beryllium contamination (Sheldon Lathe, local exhaust ventilation ductwork) as well as locations less likely to contain beryllium contamination, (light fixtures, remote floor areas). All 29 wipe samples were found to be below the level of detection (<0.5 ug/100 cm2), indicating that no measurable beryllium contamination was detected. Area samples, conducted to quantify airborne concentrations of beryllium, were also below the level of detection (<0.005 ug), indicating that no measurable beryllium was present or was generated by staff conducting the wipe samples. The results of the two bulk samples revealed no beryllium contamination above the level of detection (<0.5 ug). These results support the original wipe sample data obtained after shop decontamination efforts following the presumed one-time machining operation.

Maximum Estimated Current Be exposure: None. However, the Sheldon lathe should be considered as potentially contaminated based on its past usage.

OPERATIONAL CONTROLS: Work activities occurring in this facility will be planned and reviewed with consideration given to the potential for beryllium exposure. Controls will be prescribed when the work activity may potentially enter or disturb an area not yet characterized through beryllium sampling or monitoring. Work will be carefully planned with IH&S professional support to help assure potential exposure risks are identified and minimized through the use of appropriate controls and additional sampling/monitoring as appropriate.

Basis for above information: Stone and Webster report; (PNNL case #s 00-015, 00-016, 00-018).
Comments, including any additional information needed (specify): None.
