PAST OPERATIONS
Beryllium brought in facility: YES
Form of beryllium: Samples for laboratory analysis.
Period of beryllium operations (dates): 1963 (est.) through 1992 (est.)
Location(s) in facility that contained beryllium materials: Perchloric acid hood and associated exhaust duct.

Description of beryllium activities: Laboratory analysis of beryllium air and wipe samples.

Building monitoring data summary: None identified.

Personnel monitoring data summary: None identified.

Specify Engineering/Administrative controls used during operations: None identified.

Maximum Estimated Past Be exposure: Unknown

CURRENT OPERATIONS
Building still present: YES
Beryllium present: NO
Current building occupancy/activity: This building has been sold by GSA to a private company.

2000 Study Results: Characterization of this facility was performed on 6/23/00 by PNNL for DOE-RL. Lockheed - Martin's Y-12 plant lab, analyzed wipe samples taken on 6/23/00. The wipe samples were collected from the perchloric acid hood and the associated duct. Since these samples were taken within the affected system, no beryllium would be expected to be found during modification or dismantlement of this building. 7 of the 8 samples taken were below the detection level of 0.1ug/100cm2 with one sample with 0.11ug/100cm2. Based on this test data, it was concluded that prior potential beryllium work does not present a risk of exposure to beryllium now. These results were communicated to the GSA by DOE-RL

Maximum Estimated Current Be exposure: NONE

Basis for above information: A Hanford craftsman identified that he had seen a beryllium label under the rain cap of an exhaust vent on the roof of the North Wing of the 747-B building when roof repair work was being done in 1989. He further indicated that the vent was about 12 inches square and was toward the East side of the roof. Personnel responsible for managing the laboratory in this time frame stated that beryllium samples had been ashed (dissolved) in a perchloric acid hood in the northeast corner of the laboratory in preparation for analysis by atomic absorption spectroscopy. During facility use the exhaust duct included a HEPA filter and a water spray system that was used periodically to flush the interior of the duct and hood.

Comments, including any additional information needed (specify): None.
