“We are pleased that the Department of Energy’s tank farm contractor, Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS), is taking important steps to address improvements in the management of tank farm vapors. We support WRPS’s decision to partner with the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) and include a Hanford Atomic Metal Trades Council member as part of the review process to ensure worker insight and feedback is incorporated into the final recommendations. It is in everyone’s best interest to drive vapor exposures down to the lowest possible levels. While improvements have been made over the years to decrease vapor exposure at the tank farms, we must continue to strive to better protect our workers given advancements in technology. The Department supports the efforts of WRPS and SRNL to explore sustainable solutions to chemical vapors as operations in the tank farms increase to better meet current and future needs. We remain fully committed to the safety of all our workers and looks forward to reviewing the results of this independent review. We will ensure the implementation of enduring changes that will protect our workers now and into the future." The SRNL press release can be found here.
