The DOE will provide a restricted site visit for the National Academies committee, one of the first tours of the Hanford Site since the beginning of the pandemic to highlight the headway that is being made.

There will be three public sessions:

About the Study

In 2020, the National Academies’ Committee on Supplemental Treatment of Low-Activity Waste at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation issued their final report on supplemental methods for treating low-activity waste at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. Congress mandates in Section 3125 of the FY2021 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) a new review. The Committee on the Review of the Continued Analysis of Supplemental Treatment of Low-Activity Waste at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation is charged with review of the analysis performed by the Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) Team to assess supplemental treatment options for low activity radioactive waste at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.

This National Academies committee is tasked by Congress to review the analysis carried out by the DOE-EM-selected Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) on approaches for supplemental treatment of low-activity waste at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. The review will evaluate the technical quality and completeness of the following:

  • Methods used to conduct the risk, cost-benefit, schedule, and regulatory compliance assessments and their implementation
  • Waste conditioning and supplemental treatment approaches considered in the assessments, including any approaches not identified by DOE-EM
  • Other key information and data used in the assessments
  • Results of the assessments, including the formulation and presentation of conclusions and the characterization and treatment of uncertainties.

The review will be carried out concurrently with the FFRDC's analysis with opportunities for input from the Washington State Department of Ecology, other principal Hanford stakeholders, and members of the public.
