30 70-Day Public Comment Period and Hybrid Meeting on a Proposed Plan for Amending the Record of Decision for the 300 Area
The Department of Energy (DOE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are holding a 30 70-day public comment period and hybrid meeting on a Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act proposed plan presenting a revised remedial action to address contaminated soil known as the 300-296 waste site underneath Hanford’s 324 Building.
DOE has now completed a focused feasibility study on the methods to remediate the waste site and has presented two alternatives to EPA. Both alternatives will successfully remediate the waste to achieve cleanup levels. As part of the process to Amend the 2013 Record of Decision, DOE and EPA are now opening a public comment period to collect input on the two alternatives.
The 324 Building remains in a safe and stable configuration. Contaminated soils beneath the structure have remained stable for decades and existing monitoring indicates no migration of contamination into the groundwater. Crews will continue to monitor groundwater to ensure worker and public safety and health.
The comment period runs from June 9 to July 9 Aug. 18, 2025. A hybrid meeting will be held on June 30, at 5:30 p.m., PT, at the Richland Public Library, 955 Northgate Drive, Richland, WA 99352. To participate via Microsoft Teams, please follow the instructions below:
