Public Comment Period on the Draft Waste Incidental to Reprocessing Evaluation for the 200 West Area Tank Treatment Mission
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is holding a 30-day public comment period on its Draft Waste Incidental to Reprocessing (WIR) Evaluation for the 200 West Area Tank Treatment Mission at the Hanford Site.
This Draft WIR Evaluation concerns waste retrieved from underground storage tanks in the Hanford 200 West Area. The waste will be treated and solidified, and will be disposed of off-site at one or more licensed, commercial disposal facilities outside the state of Washington.
This Draft WIR Evaluation assesses whether this tank waste, after separation, treatment, and solidification, is incidental to reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel, is not high-level radioactive waste, and may be managed as low-level radioactive waste, under the criteria in DOE M 435.1-1, Radioactive Waste Management Manual.
The comment period runs from Feb. 23 to March 26, 2026.
Please submit all comments by March 26, to WIR_WATT@rl.gov (preferred) or mail to:
