Public Comment Period and Meeting on Proposed Changes to Expand Tank Treatment Capabilities in Hanford’s 200 East Area
The U.S. Department of Energy is holding a 60-day public comment period and meeting on a proposed Class 3 permit modification to the Hanford Dangerous Waste Permit. If approved, the modification would allow additional cesium removal process modules, called the Advanced Modular Pretreatment System (AMPS), to be added to the permit for the Low-Activity Waste Pretreatment System Operating Unit Group. Additional modules are needed to ensure the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant can operate continuously. AMPS will have double the processing capacity of the existing Tank-Side Cesium Removal System (TSCR).
Together TSCR and AMPS will remove 99.9% of cesium radioactivity from liquid waste from Hanford’s tank farms to produce pretreated low-activity waste ready to be immobilized. The Low-Activity Waste Pretreatment System Operating Unit Group is in the 200 East Area of the Hanford Site.
The comment period runs from Aug. 14 through Oct. 13, 2026. A hybrid public meeting will be held Sept. 2, at 5:30 p.m. PT, in the Gallery Room of the Richland Public Library, 955 Northgate Drive, Richland, WA 99352.
