Event: Proposed Closure Plan for the 324 Building
Category: Comment Period / Feedback Opportunity
Event Date: July 5 — September 9

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) invites you to provide input on the proposed modification to the Hanford Facility Dangerous Waste Permit by adding the 324 Building Closure Plan dangerous waste management units (DWMUs).

The 324 Building Closure Plan is specific to closure of DWMUs, which consist of four hot cells and two underground vaults. The 324 Building will be demolished under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, as required by Tri Party Agreement Milestone M-016-85, which is due in 2021.

The 324 Building was constructed between 1964 and 1966 in the Hanford Site’s 300 Area. For almost 60 years, the 300 Area was the center of Hanford's radiological research and nuclear fuel fabrication efforts. The processes created highly-contaminated facilities and waste sites, including the 324 Building. The closure plan will follow the closure process described in the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and describe how each DWMU listed in the operating permit will be removed.

The permittees’ compliance history, during the life of the permit being modified, is available from Ecology.  Copies of the permit modification request and supporting documentation are available at the Administrative Record, 2440 Stevens Drive, Richland, WA or online: http://1.usa.gov/2904nUs
