The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Richland Operations Office is proposing a modification to the Hanford Facility Dangerous Waste Permit by adding the 324 Building Closure Plan dangerous waste management units (DWMUs). A public meeting will be held August 24th at 5:30 p.m., at the Richland Public Library, 955 Northgate Drive, Richland, WA 99352. If you are unable to attend in person, you can access the meeting through an online webinar. Webinar ID: 149-051-723

The 324 Building Closure Plan is specific to closure of DWMUs, which consist of four hot cells and two underground vaults. The 324 Building will be demolished under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, as required by Tri Party Agreement Milestone M-016-85, which is due in 2021.

The 324 Building was constructed between 1964 and 1966 in the Hanford Site’s 300 Area. For almost 60 years, the 300 Area was the center of Hanford's radiological research and nuclear fuel fabrication efforts. The processes created highly-contaminated facilities and waste sites, including the 324 Building. The closure plan will follow the closure process described in the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and describe how each DWMU listed in the operating permit will be removed.

DOE is releasing the 324 Building Closure Plan for public comment. This closure plan will be processed as a Class 3 modification to the Hanford Facility Permit, which regulates the storage, treatment and disposal of Hanford’s dangerous waste.

Copies of the proposed closure plan and supporting documentation are available at the Administrative Record, 2440 Stevens Drive, Richland, WA or online at: http://pdw.hanford.gov/arpir/

A Public comment period will run from July 5—September 9, 2016.
