The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of River Protection (DOE-ORP) and the Washington Department of Ecology invite members of the public to a meeting to discuss plans for the siting, construction and operation of the Low-Activity Waste Pretreatment System (LAWPS) at the Hanford Site.

DOE-ORP representatives will provide information on the LAWPS facility and its role in treating Hanford’s tank waste. Ecology will explain the state’s role and the process of issuing a dangerous waste permit for the new facility.

The agencies welcome and look forward to addressing questions at the meeting. However, no formal comment will be taken at this meeting. The public will have an opportunity to provide comments during the permit modification process, which will include a formal comment period as well as an additional public meeting.

LAWPS will be located in Hanford’s 200 East area adjacent to the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant. The facility will be designed, constructed and operated to pretreat tank waste for vitrification as part of the Direct Feed Low-Activity Waste Program.

See the attached fact sheet for more information.
